- Numerical analysis, numerical solution of initial/boundary value problems, development and analysis of numerical algorithms.
- Scientific computing, computational methods for the solution of real problems in physics, medicine, engineering, material science, chemistry, etc.
- Optimisation, evolutionary computation, machine learning, parallel algorithms.
PhD supervision
I welcome enquiries from prospective PhD students in numerical analysis, scientific computing, computational optimisation and machine learning. My current work centres on the design and optimisation of numerical methods for differential equations, evolutionary computation and machine learning, and their application to problems in the physical sciences, engineering and medicine. I am able to act as first supervisor for projects in these areas. Proposals in adjacent areas are welcome, particularly strong applied ideas of your own.
I do not currently hold a funded studentship. Enquiries are welcome from self-funded candidates, from candidates with sponsorship from a government or employer, and from candidates intending to apply for external or competitive funding. - Chikwesiri Nwigwe, PhD student, third supervisor with Dr Hossein Malekmohamadi and Professor Shengxiang Yang (2026 to present, ¸Ô±¾ÊÓÆµ). Research on an explainable artificial intelligence framework for weather impact analysis in UK aviation.
- Nnenne Mbam, PhD student, member of the supervisory team with Dr Hossein Malekmohamadi and Dr Xin Lu (2026 to present, ¸Ô±¾ÊÓÆµ). Research on adaptive AI-assisted learning systems, investigating personalised feedback and skill development using reinforcement learning and human-computer interaction methods.
