Overview

Employability is embedded throughout our Business Management with Entrepreneurship course. So whether you want to launch your own business or change an existing organisation, this programme will help you prepare for your career after university. You’ll be developing your entrepreneurial and creative skills, and applying them to real-world situations.

Building enterprise is seen as one of the most effective ways to realise individual promise and spur the economy. Entrepreneurial minds are constantly refining ways to produce and deliver goods and services, develop new products and services, or indeed create new industries. Preliminary research shows how vital entrepreneurial thinking is to this process, driving our national prosperity.

Taught by lecturers with industry experience, this course will hone your key competences as you study core topics that cut across business and entrepreneurial practice. Innovative modules will teach you relevant knowledge and equip you with practical skills. You’ll be able to take part in a collaborative consultancy project with businesses in the Leicester area and simulate a new venture creation using SimVenture software.

And in the Venture Creation Project module, you’ll have the chance to create a feasible and compelling new business venture in a specific market, and pitch your idea to a panel consisting of staff, experienced entrepreneurs and potential investors.

You’ll also have opportunities to put your consultancy skills into practice – taking part in live projects where you can help companies tackle their real-world business challenges. There’s also the Consulting Live real life consultancy simulation – experience of working with real companies as a consultant to enhance your employability skills.

Following your first year, you’ll have the opportunity to specialise. All our Business Management degrees have a common first year, after which you can continue on the Business Management with Entrepreneurship degree or

That’s why most students will enjoy an innovative approach to learning using block teaching, where you will study one module at a time. You’ll benefit from regular assessments – rather than lots of exams at the end of the year – and a simple timetable that allows you to engage with your subject and enjoy other aspects of university life such as sports, societies, meeting friends and discovering your new city. What you will study

Block 1: Foundations of Business Management

This module introduces you to the external context of business practice and understanding the impact of globalisation on business and an introduction to business law. You are also introduced to the basic management functions of planning, leading, organising and controlling. You can expect to learn about how key internal business functions are successfully integrated in business organisations and how this in turn positions organisations for external success. In addition, you can expect to be onboarded in the areas of academic research, writing and referencing skills.

Block 2: Accounting and Budget Management

This is designed to give a very generalised introduction to the wide area of accounting and finance. It is intended to concentrate on the use of financial data as opposed to the deep methodological basis of accounting practice.

Block 3: Foundations of Marketing

This module introduces you to core marketing principles, theories, and practices. It is expected that you’ll gain a good understanding about the marketing process and the ability to make critical reflections upon contemporary marketing practices from this module. The module is intended to provide both an introduction to the topic as well as providing you with a basic grounding in the theory and practice of marketing as a business management discipline.

Block 4: Foundations of Human Resource Management and Creative Personal Branding

Foundations of Human Resource Management

This module provides you with a foundational introduction to Human Resource Management (HRM), showing you how to effectively manage, motivate, and support people within an organisation.

Through hands on analysis of workplace psychology, you will explore core HR functions alongside essential concepts in organisational behaviour. You will examine organisational dynamics such as company culture, power dynamics, conflict resolution, and change management. By understanding how individuals and groups behave at work, you will build the critical analytical skills needed to solve people management challenges and directly boost organisational performance.

Creative Personal Branding

This module introduces you to the essential strategies for developing a powerful personal brand and the core employability skills needed to thrive in a digitally driven market. You will embark on a reflective, self-exploratory journey to deepen your self-awareness, build confidence, and understand how narratives and storytelling shape audience perceptions. The curriculum also examines how emerging technologies such as AI, VR/AR, and automation are reshaping recruitment and professional identity.

With hands-on, practical outputs, you will utilise university career resources to build an authentic professional portfolio. This includes crafting a standout CV, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and a personal brand pitch presentation, alongside a reflective summary tracing your growth, networking skills, and career readiness.

Choose one option for Block 3 and two for Block 4.

Block 1: Business Intelligence and Financial Decision

The module will introduce you to key concepts in corporate finance and valuation, including the time value of money, investment appraisal and the cost of capital, before looking into working capital management and financial decision-making. You’ll also explore the role of data and tech in finance, including the use of digital tools and financial technology in analysis and decision support, as well as ethical, regulatory and governance considerations. In the final part of the module, you’ll get to examine sustainable and responsible finance, ESG integration and climate-related financial risk.

Block 2: Business Research and Analytics

This module is an extended and practical introduction to the business research process, focusing on how organisations investigate and analyse real world problems to inform effective managerial decision making. You’ll be guided through the key stages of designing and undertaking small scale business research – you’ll develop the ability to locate and interpret literature efficiently, and use this evidence to refine your research focus and support the development of an informed and method-based approach. Alongside this, you’ll receive structured, hands-on training in applied data skills. You’ll learn how to handle real data sets, perform basic quantitative and qualitative analyses, and produce clear visual outputs that help uncover trends, relationships and actionable insights.

Block 3: Freelancing and self-employment foundations

This module introduces you to the core concepts, skills and behaviours you’ll need to build a sustainable and values-driven freelance, self-employed or portfolio career. It covers value creation, client management, self promotion, project scoping, pricing and value communication, ethical practice, compliance, opportunity recognition, decision-making, implementation, communication and digital skills. You’ll explore how entrepreneurial thinking, professional identity development and strategic use of digital tools contribute to employability and long-term career adaptability. And you’ll develop adaptive, entrepreneurial and self‑aware employability capabilities that enable you to design a meaningful, flexible and opportunity‑rich career trajectory. By the end of the module, you’ll have produced a realistic business operations plan with a reflective analysis of your intended career route – building your confidence, articulating your strengths, and developing the strategic insight needed to succeed in a flexible work environment.

Block 4: Choose two of the following

Start-ups – strategy to success

This module introduces you to the core strategic decisions involved in launching and scaling a start-up. Through a structured group work case‑study simulation, you’ll examine how shifting customer expectations, competitive dynamics and industry structure can influence early‑stage strategy. At each stage, you will have to interpret data, justify strategic choices and revise your approach as new information emerges. You’ll explore pricing strategy, customer insight generation and competitor response, evaluating and selecting appropriate growth pathways, tech development, strategic partnerships and new market entry. And ultimately whether ventures should ‘scale or survive’ depending on resource availability, market timing and operational resilience. Through this mix of simulation, theory and reflective practice, you’ll develop a sophisticated understanding of the challenges and opportunities in early‑stage entrepreneurial strategy.

Making a difference from campus to community

This module gives you hands-on volunteering experience through social impact projects with local organisations and charities. It helps you build essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, project management and communication while contributing to meaningful community initiatives. Through active engagement that contributes positively to organisations, charities, social enterprises or workplaces, you’ll be gaining insight into organisational contexts, developing transferable professional skills and strengthening your employability. Your portfolio for assessment may include reflective diaries, blog posts, critical reflections and awareness campaigns.

Managing business projects

This module is designed to introduce you to the principles and practices of managing business projects. It equips you with foundational project management skills and provides you with opportunities to apply project planning tools and techniques to practical scenarios. By the end of this module, you’ll be able to apply project management approaches to structure, plan and communicate small‑scale business projects.

Ethical and responsible leadership

This module explores the central role of ethics and responsibility in contemporary leadership and organisational practice. You’ll examine how debates about business responsibility have evolved and analyse how leaders navigate complex ethical dilemmas. You’ll be introduced to core theories of ethical and responsible leadership, and be provided with practical tools for evaluating decision‑making, assessing consequences of managerial actions and fostering ethical cultures. Through case studies, scenario‑based activities and reflective analysis, you’ll develop the skills and judgement required to approach ethical challenges confidently and professionally in real business contexts.

As part of this course, you will have the option to complete a paid placement year which offers invaluable professional experience.

The optional placement year allows you to gain a minimum of 40 weeks of paid, industry-relevant work experience in the UK or abroad. You will apply theory in a professional context while developing confidence, networks and employability skills. The placement is fully supported and quality assured by the university, and will enable you to graduate with a ‘BA with placement year’ award.

Our students have taken placements with companies including BMW, Rolls Royce, Triumph, Warner Bros, Walt Disney and Nike.

Block 1: Organisational resilience

This module equips you with the advanced knowledge and skills to understand how organisations anticipate, absorb, respond to and recover from major disruptions. You’ll explore contemporary theories of organisational resilience and systemic risk, examining how global disruptions such as pandemics, economic shocks and geopolitical instability challenge organisational stability. Through a crisis simulation and a consultancy‑style resilience strategy assessment, you’ll get to evaluate vulnerabilities, assess preparedness and design strategic interventions.

Block 2: Managing change and innovations

This module introduces you to managing change and innovation, which will be central to your survival, success and growth in your career. By the end of the module, you’ll have a full understanding of the managerial strategies that organisations use to manage different types of innovation, as well as how they seek to benefit from their innovations.

Block 3 and 4: Choose two specialist modules

In the third and fourth blocks of your final year, you will choose two of the following specialist modules.

New venture creation

In this module, you’ll each identify an entrepreneurial opportunity and conduct a full feasibility analysis, including problem and opportunity validation, market research, competitor analysis, customer segmentation, technical and operational feasibility, resource requirements, risk assessment and mitigation, and development of a clear value proposition. You’ll produce an individual Venture Feasibility plan – putting into practice your critical evaluation, synthesis of evidence and applied venture development thinking. You’ll also get to create and present a pitch to a panel of staff, entrepreneurs and investors where you’ll be demonstrating your professional communication, clarity of argument, effective use of evidence and investor readiness.

Consulting Live

The Consulting Live module provides you with an applied, practice‑based simulation of real‑world business consulting. Working on live scenarios co‑created with ‘The Crucible’ early‑stage ventures, you’ll act as a junior consultant – conducting research, generating insights and solving organisational challenges. This will develop your ability to analyse complex business problems, gather and interpret evidence, and produce actionable recommendations that add value to client organisations. This module also includes a structured group‑work element in which you and your peers operate as consultancy teams. You’ll collaboratively diagnose client problems, allocate roles (eg: analyst, project manager, presenter), manage shared tasks, and integrate diverse perspectives to create coherent strategic recommendations. Through this engagement with both entrepreneurial partners and peers, you’ll gain authentic consulting experience, develop professional communication skills and build confidence in working collaboratively with stakeholders.

Dissertation

The module provides an opportunity for you to undertake an independent study in an area of special interest within the broad area of business management. It builds on your introductory business research skills and prepares you for postgraduate research study. This module draws on the academic skills and practices you have been taught since the beginning of the programme.
